OUR HISTORY
1996
First United Methodist Church of Winter Park (FUMCWP) begins sending mission teams to Northern Costa Rica.
2007
While on a trip to Los Chiles, FUMCWP is made aware of the many slums around Los chiles without access to clean water.
2010
First successful well is drilled in the Los Chiles neighborhood of Achotal. That well is still providing clean water to this day.
2012
Agua Viva Serves (AVS) is founded and begins operating as an independent non-profit. Over $50,000 is raised to bring in a Deep Rock M-60 drilling rig and a Ford F-250 Drilling Truck.
2016
A record year with over 150 volunteers supporting our efforts. This year also marked the installation of our 60th well.
2017
Agua Viva Serves reaches over 6600 people with 70 wells and 4 larger water tower systems - the largest of these systems reaches as many as 1000 people.
2018
We complete our 6th year of independent operation. Projects going strong and plans for a major project in Medeo Queso are launched.
2019
Medio Queso project is completed and reaches another 700 people
2020 A Challenging Beginning
The global pandemic of 2020 brought challenges to everyone, but it also marked a pivotal moment for our foundation. Despite the difficulties, we launched a new water project at Isla Chica #2, showcasing our commitment to bringing clean water to underserved communities even in the most challenging times.
2021 Expanding Our Reach
Agua Viva expanded its operations to new areas, reaching San Carlos of Cutris for the very first time. While continuing to improve and maintain the water systems we already served, we also initiated a large-scale water project for the community of San Isidro, aiming to transform the lives of many families
2022 Empowering Communities
By 2022, our efforts focused on sustainability and community empowerment. We worked closely with the community of La Guaria, handing over the management of their water system to local community members. This transition ensured the system's sustainability and strengthened the community's ability to maintain it independently.
2023: Celebrating 100 Wells and Local Leadership
The year 2023 was a milestone for our foundation as we celebrated the achievement of reaching 100 successful wells—a testament to our unwavering commitment to providing clean water to those in need. This year also marked a strategic decision for Agua Viva to have 100% management by local talent in Costa Rica, reinforcing our dedication to empowering the communities we serve. Alongside these major accomplishments, we overcame significant logistical challenges caused by the pandemic and other factors to successfully launch a second attempt to complete the water project in San Isidro. This project now serves 85 families in the community, representing another significant achievement.
2024: Building Local Leadership and Expanding Training
At the start of 2024, we achieved another significant accomplishment. After extensive training and induction for committee members, we transferred the administration of the water system in Medio Queso to the local committee. Inspired by this success, we worked to replicate the training model in other committees, empowering them to become more independent. This approach not only strengthened the sustainability of existing systems but also allowed us to focus on launching new projects to serve communities still without access to clean water.
2025: Looking Ahead
We are very excited about the projects we have for this year and the opportunity to continue Agua Viva's incredible journey. With each milestone, we remain dedicated to writing an amazing history of service and impact, bringing clean water to those who need it most.
